Catalunya,
a beautiful Mediterranean coastal region in Spain is made up of four
provinces: Barcelona , Lleida, Tarragona and Girona, bordering France
to the north and the Valencian region to the south. As all other
parts of Spain , catalunya went through Roman and Muslim domain to
later be given its freedom from the Arabs in the 12 th ac. Starting
then and with the growth of the Renaissance emphasizing literary and
philosophical expression, the catalans flourished their own language.
Later on with industrialization, the distinctiveness
of catalunya was even more accented in its cultural pride, political
ideas of catalunya wanting to be an independent nation and having its
own legal rights. But if the catalans are known for one characteristic,
it would be their determination in achieving their autonomy which was
finally given to catalunya in 1979.
Why we appreciate catalunya
Catalunya has
offered so much and still has much more to show and share with the
rest of the world. If only taking into consideration catalunya´s
long and extensive coastline, it offers all kinds of water sports,
world-wide events such as the Olympics and the Forum Barcelona which
can be currently visited. The Costa Brava and Costa Dorada have clean
sandy beaches and has enough accommodations like bungalows, chalets,
renting apartments or fabulous hotels. Rewarded with austere architecture
and more up to date, catalunya is a power business zone with the
main focus being Barcelona and Girona.
What is Barcelona
Girona?
Girona,
one of the four provinces of catalunya is located about 100 kilometers
northeast of barcelona , not far from the French border. Unlike
many other Spanish cities where the predominant population for over
six centuries were the Muslims, girona has a clearly marked Jewish
heritage. Girona has one of the best conserved Jewish quarters or
neighborhoods in Western Europe and a remarkable museum to prove
it. Not leaving out catholic influence, girona has its share of baroque,
gothic and Roman cathedrals. Impressive archaeological findings such
as one of the only three existing cemeteries for drying and mummifying
bodies in the world. The most emblematic festivity in girona as in
all catalunya is Sant Jordi, celebrated to the max.
