The Olympic Games 1992 in Barcelona

As we have all learned well before the Barcelona olympics, the greeks were the great athletes and promoters of this fantastic world-wide competition. Before, there used to be competitions between local teams, then national, later continental and finally intercontinental which all started in Athens , Greece in 1896. One of the most popular symbols of the olympic games is the eternal lit torch, continually lighting the way. At the barcelona olympics, this torch was lit by a paralympic archer. Another emblematic image is the five olympic game rings. But the fact that there was participation of every nation that has a National Olympic Committee, something which had not happened in the past twenty years, made the Barcelona olympics extraordinary.

169 nations, 28 sports, over 9,000 athletes actively took part in the barcelona olympics. The Port Olympic, a once unused, unattended duty potty was magically changed into the Coastal park which housed the Olympic Village. The entrance point are the twin towers formed by the Arts Hotel, Mapfre Towers and Nova Icaria Square .

The barcelona olympics and its symbolism

In the 1992 barcelona olympics, the host´s interpretation of its own poster, mascot and emblem was original. The emblem was a dynamic, abstract human figure jumping over the five olympic rings. The bright colors had their own meaning for the olympic games in barcelona ; the blue was the omnipresent blue Mediterranean sea and the yellow was to show the bright sunshine and hospitality so characteristic of Spain . On the medal was the goddess of victory and the cute mascot “Cobi”, the adorable dog, welcoming all. For the 2004 olympic games, the torch came back to the barcelona olympics stadium and was then sent on to this year´s host, the Greeks.
