Today starts the famous last straight line

J - 6: legislative German will take place next Sunday. Today starts the famous "last straight line." While opinion polls indicate a slight rebound in voting intentions for the Social Democrats led by Frank - Walter Steinmeier, the outgoing Chancellor wanted, Friday, display its serenity and has embarked on a decrease in the income tax.

At a press conference, Angela Merkel appeared visibly relaxed. If discrete ordinarily on his private life, she did not hesitate to report to the newspaper "Die welt" that she "could absolutely not work" without Joachim Sauer, her husband. It therefore remains in the axis of the past few weeks: a campaign centered on the person, "presidential", above the parties. Explains Gerd Langguth, political scientist and author of a biography of Angela Merkel, "trying to avoid any polarization, because harder is the campaign, the SPD can mobilize its reservoir of voters".It was also much of the Pittsburgh Summit, capitalizing on his image of Manager of the crisis, along with other great powers.

Those who blamed him, in his own camp, not enough to engage on the substance, it made some clarifications on its program. She made a gesture in the direction of the Liberals of the FDP, its allies in preference to form the next Government in engaging on a decrease in tax revenue in the next legislature. "Tax cuts create growth which, in turn, increases tax revenues", she argued, without however giving calendar or detailed plan. The Minister of Finance (SPD), Peer Steinbrück, immediately declared these promises "unrealistic", given the hundreds of billions of euros of new debt that the State shall contract in the next four years.

A more vague program

To avoid giving the impression of a substantial rapprochement with the FDP, a foil for many centrist voters, however Angela Merkel has stipulated that with it there is no relaxation of the redundancies Act, privatization of the system of health or removal of the Agency for employment (whose missions would be entrusted to the Commons, in the program of the FDP).

The CDU has this year voters a program voluntarily vaguer and much more social than in 2005. Four years ago, the "neoliberal" project of coalition with the Liberals had failed, the CDU does it with 1 on the SPD, and being forced to a grand coalition. The Chancellor shall adopt this year a profile much more consensual, to remove any possibility of caricature in the Social Democrats. It did not plan of action for the first 100 days following his second possible investiture, that wants to make the CSU, the Bavarian party ally of the CDU today. "This strategy is not without risk, falls Gerd Langguth, because the CDU supporters also want to know its real objectives." But the Chancellor on the assumption that in times of crisis, voters prefer the continuity to the alternating.

The Liberals, who had been highly critical in recent weeks for the "Hatzair" of conservatives, are however strongly committed, over the weekend for an exclusive coalition with the CDU and the CSU. The three parties do not reach the 50 percent according to polls. But a special feature of the electoral system, they could win a majority of the seats with only 47 or 48 of the vote.
